Evangelical Intelligentsia leadership’s soft evangelicalism

JD Hall of Pulpit & Pen reminds us that Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, “is the alpha-dog of the Reformed theological world, one of the architects of the SBC’s Conservative Resurgence, and is generally speaking the smartest person in the room (literally). Mohler’s theology is impeccably sound, but decisions in recent years have left many shaking their heads.”  JD chides Mohler for what he believes are his troubling personal relationships and political denominational promotions.

And then there’s ERLC Research Fellow and Liberty University professor Karen Swallow-Prior.  According to JD, Swallow-Prior, a self-described feminist, “has repeatedly shown a disregard for biblical holiness in her associations.”  This includes “attending a ‘gay Christian’ film festival, partnering with unbelievers to advise animal rights groups [and] joining with feminists that bash complementarianism.”

Mohler and Gay-Affirming ERLC Fellow Talk #BlackLivesMatter

Christianity Today reached out to “evangelical leaders” to ask what the pro-life community can learn from the #BlackLivesMatter, and vice versa. One can only wonder if the Downgrade will go so far in evangelicalism that we’ll soon see similar articles about what the pro-life movement can learn from the Communist Party, Green Peace, or the Democratic Party.

As we previously informed you, #BlackLivesMatter is no innocent grassroots organization concerned about legitimate police brutality, but a Marxist organization run by overt racists, race-baiters and sympathizers of domestic terrorism (source link) and well-funded by splinter-cells of ACORN and billionaire socialist financier, George Soros (source link). Of course,  you know all of that unless you are living under a rock.

Clearly, evangelicals eager to find common ground with secularists are quickly capitulating and pandering on the issue of race. We have seen an absolute rolling over on important ethical issues for the sake of political correctness and progressive applause, from Russell Moore (source link) to John Piper (source link) to the recent InterVarsity conference (source link). Let’s face it, folks. We have clearly entered the age of Soft Evangelicalism – a nicer, more likable, politically correct, nuanced and whimsical evangelicalism. Short of the base support to capitulate (overtly) on the topic of human sexuality, Soft Evangelicalism, under the leadership of the Evangelical Intelligentsia, has chosen two issues with which to change our tone and build bridges with those whom we want most to like us – immigration and race.

The individuals reached out to by Christianity Today to opine on what Christ could learn from Belial the pro-life movement could learn from #BlackLivesMatter that most that most interest us are Albert Mohler and Karen Swallow Prior.

Mohler is the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is the alpha-dog of the Reformed theological world, one of the architects of the SBC’s Conservative Resurgence, and is generally speaking the smartest person in the room (literally). Mohler’s theology is impeccably sound, but decisions in recent years have left many shaking their heads. These include allowing Louisiana Baptist Convention president, David Hankins (who has consistently sought to persecute Southern graduates in Louisiana in a crusade against Calvinism) to just be renewed as a trustee at SBTS (source link), his continued promotion of social progressive Russell Moore (source link), his back-peddling on reparative therapy and sexual orientation (source link) and his nomination of IHOP-speaking, confetti canon baptistry-operating Ronnie Floyd as president of the SBC (source link). Whereas Mohler’s doctrine is solid, his personal relationships and political denominational promotions have been troubling.

Karen Swallow-Prior, Southern Baptist ERLC Research Fellow and Liberty University professor

Karen Swallow-Prior, Southern Baptist ERLC Research Fellow and Liberty University professor

Karen Swallow Prior has been written about extensively at Pulpit and Pen (click here for list of articles). Most recently, she tweeted a lascivious and affirming comment to a gay pastor, related to her support for #BlackLivesMatter (source link). She is an animal rights activist, demanding an end to mass farming even if it means “the economy of our country be damned” (source link). She brought the SBC’s ERLC into partnership with the radical Human Society, with whom she also serves (source link). She is a self-described feminist (source link). She has promoted erotic gay propaganda (source link). She received criticism from around the internet (source link) for defending abortion clinics against charges that abortion is murder, saying that calling abortion murder is “unchristlike” (source link). She spoke at a “gay christian” fundraiser and is a hero to the LGBTQXYZ “community” (source link) and while giving lip-service to the sinfulness of sodomy, is clearly affirming in her behavior, associations and worldview (for how she is gay affirming, click here). Prior is a research fellow at the ERLC, a literature professor at Liberty University, and writes for Christianity Astray and other publications.

In response to the question of what the pro-life movement can learn from #BlackLivesMatter, Mohler wrote…

If committed to the worldview of Scripture, both #BlackLivesMatter and the pro-life movement ground their moral urgency in the fact that every single human being—regardless of race, ethnicity, condition of life, or stage of development—is an image bearer of God. In this sense, there should be both common ground and common support. #BlackLivesMatter needs to be concerned about the racial disparity in abortion in America, and the pro-life movement has to remember that the sanctity of life means all of life.

Mohler’s statement is gobbledegook. The if in his first sentence is clearly unnecessary, because anyone with access to Google knows that #BlackLivesMatter certainly isn’t committed to a Biblical worldview. Everyone knows this. Everyone also knows that the organization has no problem with black-on-black violence, and that especially includes violence in the black womb. Why we’re opining on hypothetical absurdities like the one upon which Mohler’s statement is prefaced, is beyond me.  Continue reading

Don’t you just love it when someone cuts throw all the fluff and gets to the heart of the matter? The true colors of Al Mohler are showing through his long maintained façade of authentic Christianity. Mohler’s defection to the enemy of Christ began long ago. In 2009 he signed the Manhattan Declaration, the highly revered and even more highly esteemed ecumenical document signed by every Tom, Dick, and Harry in the “Christian world”, no matter their doctrinal integrity. He makes no bones about associating with anyone who will further his own agenda of increased self-importance and recognition among his peers. His own supposed “doctrinal integrity” should be challenged on all fronts for to say you believe doctrine “XYZ” and then to befriend and agree with those who oppose doctrine “XYZ” is deceitful to the core. He cannot hold hands with every flavor of “Christianity” while failing to point out their short-comings and be considered a “brother in Christ”. Rather he should be known that his true self: a compromiser, a capitulator, and a traitor to the Lord he claims to love and serve. Al Mohler cannot be trusted. He says one thing and does another. He is a double minded man and unstable in ALL his ways. Instead of being persecuted for his so-called “stand for the Gospel and for Christ” he is welcomed by all the world, opposed by few (none) of his peers, given high accolades for his new perspectives on the ‘gospel’ when it is in fact another gospel. Instead of preaching holy living, AM cozies up to the likes of supreme compromiser Russell Moore and his friends. Karen Prior being one of them. Does he really think that he can fool everyone? Apparently so. All the false prophets believe that.

Darrel, could NOT agree with you more. Excellant perceptive, discerning comments. For the life of me, cannot understand why some of us get it and some people don’t! These people may fool the masses, but they’re not fooling God. The Bible says, “God will NOT be mocked.” By the actions of these SBC people (and all the other’s) they’re taking millions down the broad road that doesn’t lead to Heaven. Unless they repent and get right with God, the’re going to be accountable for following literal doctrines of devils. The Bible gives us much instruction and insight on what to look for in the latter days. We’re seeing the signs all around us. God has His Remnant, His Bride of Christ in the “invisible church.” We who’re true believers in Jesus and His Gospel and none other, hear His voice, as He speaks to His sheep.
He wants us to be aware, not caught unawares.

I’ve observed Russell Moore since he came aboard to his lofty position. He (like AM, his mentor) is double minded, liberal agenda/social gospel. But, when needed he can masquerade as a conservative Christian, to get his agenda pushed through.
Ronnie Floyd, Pres. of SBC is in fellowship with Mike Bickle of IHOP. He spoke to 18K young people at OneThing, the end of Dec.

I’m thankful there re those like JD Hall and Marsha West who as you said, “get to the heart of the matter.” We must support and encourage each other in these perilous times. People seem to think a revival is coming…what we’re clearly seeing is “departure and a great falling away.” God is sovereign, He is in control and his plans won’t be thwarted.

Didn’t mean to write as much. Hope some of what I’ve said build’s your faith, in allowing you to know, there are a lot of us out here, who see what’s going on. God is shaking things up and His judgment is brewing.

Be strong and of good courage,

      Debora Mann

    Darrel,
As usual, your comments are right on target. Praise God He gives discernment to His people so we will not be fooled by men like Mohler, Moore, and a host of others posing as ministers of righteousness. These men prostitute the word of God for the sake of financial gain as well as power. This is from Octavius Winslow,

“The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine on the land; not a famine
of bread or water but of hearing the words of the Lord.”
    Amos 8:11

Already has this famine of the true word of God commenced!

How few, forming their ministry upon the apostolic
model, can affirm with Paul, “My speech and my
preaching are not with enticing words of man’s wisdom,
but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power!”

How few, disdaining artificial embellishment, and
scorning the applause of men won by a vain show
of intellect and eloquence, preach that simple truth
of which Jesus is the Author, the Substance, the
Glory, the Power, and the End; purely, boldly,
    faithfully, affectionately, uncompromisingly!

How few who honestly and heartily desire to lift up
their Lord and Master; themselves lost behind the
glory of His person and the splendors of His cross!

How sadly, how painfully, is the Lord Jesus Christ
kept in the background! How is His glory obscured,
His beauty veiled, His honor withheld!

“The time will come, when a faithful minister
of the Gospel will be more scarce and precious
than a bar of gold!” John Owen

“The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine on the land; not a famine
of bread or water but of hearing the words of the Lord.”
    Amos 8:11

Debora, you stated “People seem to think a revival is coming…what we’re clearly seeing is “departure and a great falling away.” God is sovereign, He is in control and his plans won’t be thwarted.” Amen and Amen – this falling away is happening at lightening speed. May our Lord sustain and strengthen us in the days ahead. Yes indeed, the wrath of God will soon be unleashed.

  3. Darrel January 25, 2016 at 11:30 am #

I wholeheartedly concur with both Debora and Lyn. Paul stated “My speech and my preaching are not with enticing words of man’s wisdom…:” (1 Cor.2:4) but the hirelings of our day (that includes 99%+++ of today’s “preachers”) speak nothing but man’s “wisdom”—usually their own.

As for the much spoken of, hoped for, and prayed for “revival” it ain’t gonna happen!! NOWHERE in Scripture is there even a hint of a coming “revival” in the last (our) days, only the “falling away”, more and more apostasy, greater persecutions. It is not popular to speak of things upcoming in such a “negative light” but that does not negate the truth of God’s Word. Rather than turn people away from their sins and unto the Savior, we find the precise opposite: turn to the ‘church’, turn to a (false) hope of renewal (revival), turn to your favorite golden boy (or girl) preacher, anything BUT humbling ourselves before God in repentance, confessing our sins (Daniel 9). All of the current day lies about a coming “revival” have their roots in dominionism. Those who claim to be of the “reformed” ilk (which has degenerated into just another cult) call it “reconstruction”. Whatever the label it all boils down to this: the “church” must reclaim the earth from all it’s current ills (social, political, economic, etc.) and until the “church” does this they claim that the LORD WILL NOT RETURN TO EARTH. This is the ‘why’ of the modern day push for “revival” and all of it stems from New Age teaching and NOT the Bible (start your own search with Alice Bailey).

Last Friday Bob Allen at Baptist News revealed that Mohler has signed on to the Rubio campaign to serve on his “Dignity of Life Advisory Board”. Mohler does this without regard to the Word of God (what else is new?). As a “preacher” and/or “minister of the Gospel” he has NO BUSINESS entangling himself with the affairs of this life-politics-2 Tim. 2:4. This move is also a mockery of God as Mohler again ignores the Word of God found in 2 Cor. 6:11-18. Yet the fools will line up behind him to support him, basically no matter what he does.

    • lyn January 25, 2016 at 12:18 pm #

Not to mention Rubio is a Roman Catholic, why would any born again believer of Christ get involved in politics and throw his support behind a man that follows a dead religion? It is painstakingly obvious that Mohler too adheres to a dead religion. The push for a global government and religion continues to build as all the pieces of the puzzle rapidly fall into place.

    • lyn January 25, 2016 at 12:21 pm #

This link shows the ‘religion’ of Rubio – http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/04/marco-rubio-a-catholic-remembers-little-of-his-time-in-the-mormon-church/

He seems to go with whatever the ‘flavor of the month’ is, which so many men-pleasers do. Anything to win that ‘evangelical’ support.

  5. lyn January 25, 2016 at 12:15 pm #

Excellent points Darrel; Bailey’s writings are similar to that of Madame Helena Blavatsky, who was occultic in her thinking and writing. We see much of the same ‘ideology’ making headway in our day. There truly is nothing new under the sun.

The evil forces and global powers that be are aligning, soon everything will fall into place. Not to worry, Christ has promised never to leave or forsake His true sheep.

  6. Debora January 25, 2016 at 1:18 pm #

Well, Darrel and Lyn, needless to say, we’re on the same pg. This AM have read your comments.. Amen, Amen and Amen…builds my faith tremendously, when connect with like minded TRUE believers.

Darrel, your comments re: the revival, dominion, NAR are SO on point! My Bible says nothing! re: bringing in God’s kingdom before Jesus raptures His Church. satanic driven! All about unity, ecumenism, the road to Rome. God will not always strive with man…we’re seeing this happening. IF some sort of revival were to occur, it would be of satan’s making…counterfeit all the way!! “God wouldn’t be in it!”

We serve an Almighty God and a Wonderful Savior. He’s not going to allow us to be deceived…in these latter days,..if it were possible, even the elect could be deceived. Horrendous!

Yes, there are some hand’s off sites with folks who think they have the gift of discernment, but don’t. Like you all, gravitate to sites like this…have some other good ones visit regularly…do my own research accordingly. One site I check each day is Pulpit and Pen, where above article came from. They stay on the firing line! NO compromise. Good research, good sound reporting.

PTL for being able to share and have spiritual understanding re: where we are in this apostate world. The America I loved and respected is NO more! Grievous and troubling. We’re clearly living in the untoward, perverted, lawless, demonic teaching/preaching, evil generation. As in the days of Noah. I believe God began removing His Hand off America many yrs. ago, when prayer was taken out of school, abortion legalized, et al. The slippery slope began, never ended.

I think of First Samuel Chp. 8, when the people rebelled and didn’t listen. They wanted “their own king.” God became enraged and said, “let them have their king.” So, it was with Obama being elected twice! The people wanted him and the whirlwind of reaping has been a travesty and a tragedy.

RE: SBC. I pray God will shake the foundations of evil!! The change agents have done their work. Moore, Floyd, Mohler, Warren and all the others have desecrated God’s Holy Word…compromise, compromise! Trojans have infiltrated the churches, i.e. Southern Baptist, was a bulwark and stood strong for God. No more.

The thing with Rubio is over the edge!! (btw, Moore’s mother was raised catholic. So, he has this thing re: associating with catholics…what about him going with Warren to see the pope in 11/2014?) NO surprise he’s ALL for Rubio, esp. with the immigration issue! Moore is social gospel/all about causes. He needs to be removed from ERLC. Well, looks like have been on my proverbial soap box!! Thanks for listening.

Excellent thoughts Debora, thank you for sharing. The falling away is truly in place, along with other indications of the times in which we live. It is wise to cleave to our Lord and Savior and spend more time in prayer, in bible study, in His presence. As the world aligns under one mind, we must continue to stand apart from this evil. God will grant us the strength we need when we need it.
