One more reason to avoid Lysa TerKeurst of Elevation Church

Elizabeth Prata of The End Time reveals yet another reason to leave Lysa.  For one thing, Steven Furtick is Lysa’s pastor.  She sits under Furtick’s abominable teaching. This man is a false teacher. (Here’s  proof).  So we have cause for concern.  Prata wonders, “How can you learn discernment from a Bible teacher who does not possess it herself?” Good question.  Let’s hear what she has to say…

Wolf - Little Red Ridding Hood

Lysa TerKeurst is a ladies Bible study teacher. She has written several best-selling books and is founder of Proverbs 31 ministries. She is attractive, engaging, seems to have a good handle on the Bible, and is very popular with women. Sadly, however, there are numerous issues with the kind of Christianity Mrs TerKeurst promotes. (Her name is pronounced ter–rhymes with sir; keurst–rhymes with burst).

People have written about the concerning issues with Mrs TerKeurst before. Michelle Lesley did a great job on why we should be leaving Lysa, and Aimee Byrd negatively reviewed Mrs TerKeurst’s 17th and most famous book, here.

I’d like to add another of the credible discernment concerns with Mrs TerKeurst. Seth Dunn recently spoke of Mrs TerKeurst in his podcast The Christian Commute. I was impressed with how he stated one of the concerns with Mrs TerKeurst and why she should not be followed. I’ll transcribe it below. His podcast discussing Mrs TerKeurst is within the broadcast called, Driving Miss Beth to the Bus Stop. In it, Seth addresses how hard it is to review women’s Bible studies when the “meat” of them are on video. He uses Mrs TerKeurst as one of the examples. Here’s Seth Dunn-

Ladies Bible Studies are a mess. Priscilla Shirer, Beth Moore, LifeWay Industry … they are often shallow, trite or downright hermeutically bad. I think one of the responsibilities as a man, as a husband, as a spiritual leader of my household is to make sure that my wife is being fed in Bible study, good food that doesn’t come from wolves.

Lysa TerKeurst is a member of Elevation Church, that’s Steven Furtick’s church. No matter what Lysa TerKeurst says in her Bible studies, she’s known as the Proverbs 31 woman, I’m sure you’ve seen her little sayings. Sometimes we automatically have guilt by association. It’s not so much guilt by association, it’s guilt by subjugation. She is under the authority of her pastor. Her being at Elevation Church implicitly communicates that she agrees with what goes on there and that she agrees with the teachings of Steven Furtick.

Furtick is a narcigete who reads himself into scripture, who uses preacher chords, who has spontaneous baptisms. If you’re not aware of this, at Elevation Church they have young vibrant people get up during invitation time to act like they’re going to respond to the invitation, in order to encourage other people to emotionally respond to the invitation, so they’ll get baptized. That’s how they have such high baptism numbers. They manipulate people. At Elevation Church they have a coloring book they give to the kids, with a picture of Steven Furtick that says, “We are united under the vision that God gave Pastor Steven.” …So we know that Lysa TerKeurst is under this bad mojo Elevation Church. So we should already be suspicious of her.

Why do I bring her up? My wife came home with a Lysa TerKeurst Bible study. It’s called Twelve Women of the Bible, co-authored by Lysa TerKeurst, and my wife said she was given it from one of the ladies at another local church. It’s a Southern Baptist Church, I’ve listened to the preaching there, it’s solid. If you go onto their website and look at their statement of beliefs, it’s solid. You can be lulled into a false sense of security there. You can think ‘surely this solid Southern Baptist Church, with a solid expository preacher, who has a doctorate from a fine seminary, they wouldn’t have bad ladies’ teaching there, or any kind of bad bible studies.’ But they do. They’re passing out a Lysa TerKeurst book.  Continue reading

Lysa is also speaking at The Gathering 2016 on September 21st. http://thegathering2016.com/?team=lysa-terkeurst

And, as for Steven Furtick, Lysa’s pastor, I didn’t realize that he is a speaker at Hillsong Conferences around the world.

As I understand stand it, Lysa no longer attends Elevation Church nor is a part of that ministry. As people grow and mature in their faith, truly searching out scripture FOR THEMSELVES, the Holy Spirit will reveal error. Who as a Christian can say that they have NEVER followed or read the teachings of someone and then discovered that in fact there is error. I have read her book “Its Not Supposed To Be This Way”, I have reviewed the study guide and I have listened to the DVD. It is solid scriptural material and Lysa refers heavily to Scripture that she ENCOURAGES readers AND listeners to read in FULL context for themselves. I believe her message in this book will encourage many women in their walk with the Lord.

I’d LOVE to find out where you heard that she no longer attends Elevation. If that’s the case, I could start following her again without the dark clouds of her association there hanging over her head. Her teaching is sound, but as others have said, we have to watch out for things the enemy will slip in because of Steven Furtick. Thanks!

Tara and Char, even if she no longer serves at or is a member of Elevation (and I have not heard that she has left that church as a member), it might not be due to her growing and maturing in Christ, but to the growth of her own ministry activity. Remember, she has never once warned her many followers about Elevation, nor has she repented or corrected any of her previous teachings.

When you look at all of her sites and things she is involved with, it is hard to imagine her having time to cram much more into her schedule. Instead of saying “Elevation bad” (and it is), look at the rest of what she is teaching and hold everything she says, writes and posts up to the light of Scripture. In my experience with successful false teachers, it is extremely rare to see any of them turn over a new leaf — even those who claim they “no longer teach heresy” almost always do.

1 Cor 14:34-35 Instead of Spontaneous Baptisms why not ask Jesus for a real Baptism of the Holy Ghost?

From the tone of your arguments against Lysa Terkheurst, I am convinced that you are the one whose heart, mind, body, and soul fight against God the Father. The picture you have painted of yourself is that of an aggressive intimidator. If you wish to speak the Truth, I suggest you yourself take the time to fight your own inner battles!

Judgmental people never win. I agree with Stringfellow!

You have no real argument against the teachings of Lysa Terkheurst, only against the church she attends and the pastor she sits under. Often times, people in a particular situation are actually following the Lord and waiting on His timing. I myself have been in a similar situation. The judgement surrounding the Lords timing is why people no longer trust in the Lords timing. Before tearing someone else down so harshly, maybe take the time to discover the real truth and not the truth of your own making.

Well, its so interesting how everyone has gotten so twisted up in the game ! not Gods word I remember seriously long ago a new believer When Sandy Patty was shamed for some wrong doing no one knew the truth exactly they just shunned her the Christian world, that’s what we are good at. We talk yet we do not walk apparently in Matthew scripture say the body will turn cold as Joyce Myers explained that means the believers in Church are becoming like the secular world !!!
I bow in shame also Man is his own destruction

You know, I stumbled upon this just by googling her name (I needed to know how to spell it to tell my coworker about it). I wasn’t going to click this in case I saw terrible things that may or may not be true that would ruin what I experienced today, but I’m glad I did because the criticism isn’t as bad as I thought. I agree with not only being taught scripture by a woman, but I joined my first women’s group tonight. I’m 24 and grew up in the Bible Belt where I was forced to go to church just so people knew I was going to church. I joined something in high school that introduced kids to Jesus who maybe don’t go to church and I had a good experience but after high school I strayed away. I started to drink a lot because it was the only time I was happy. I started to go to church (hungover) and felt the spirit every Sunday, knowing in my heart I needed to stop doing things to fill the void only Jesus can. I recently quit drinking as much and haven’t had a drink in two weeks. Tonight I went to the women’s gathering and we watched a video from Lysa about disappointment. It was exactly what I needed to hear and there were so many things said that I’ve never put in perspective before. This article can be 100% true, but God used Lysa to bring me to him tonight and I just wanted people who saw this to know how grateful I am. And as a Christian, I know you are too.

So much judgment!! Isn’t that God’s job?

I’ve studied the Word for 35 years. I participated in a small group reading Becoming more than a Good Bible Study Girl. It was scriptural sound and encouraged you to read the Bible. You wrote a long article and never mentioned quotes that she wrote that are theoretically/biblically wrong. Is there a sentence before the trial/testimony?
